Munich Residenz:
The Residenz Hotel in central Munich is the former royal palace of the Wittelsbach kings in Bavaria. The Residenz is the largest city palace in Germany and today is open to visitors due to its architecture, room decorations, and exhibits from the former royal collections. The first buildings on this site were constructed in 1385 and were funded by the city of Munich as punishment for the failed uprising against Stephen III (1375-1413) and his younger brothers. The Silver Tower (Silberturm), as the strongest stronghold, is notably located next to the inner walls that protect the castle from the city. This powerful new castle (Neufesti), surrounded by extensive moats and located at the extreme northeastern corner of the new double ring of the city walls, replaced the difficult-to-defend Alter Hof (Old Court) located in the centre of the city. The city served as the residence of the rulers of Wittelsbach. Because the dukes of the divided state often felt the need to distance themselves from the frequently rebellious townsfolk on the one hand and for some defence against their warring kinsmen on the other. As a result, they sought to build a shelter for themselves that was both impregnable and easy to leave (straight towards the glacier, without having to enter the city lanes) at the same time. Around 1470, during the reign of Albert IV (1465-1508), the castle walls and its northern gate were built, followed by the construction of two towers. The Gothic foundation walls and basement vaults of the old castle including the rounded columns of the so-called ballroom vault (Ballsaal Keller) are today the oldest surviving parts of the palace. The Residenz not only developed over the centuries from its main centre, the Neuveste but also emerged from several individual parts and extensions, the first of which was the Antiquarium. Finally, after more than four centuries of development, the gigantic palace replaced the entire former city quarter with barracks, a convent, houses, and gardens. It combines the styles of the late Renaissance, as well as Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassicism.
